Taipei

Taipei might be the most underrated city in Asia. The night markets alone are worth the trip — stinky tofu, bubble tea from the place that invented it, oyster omelets sizzling on a griddle. But it's also hot springs in the mountains, temples tucked into alleyways, and some of the friendliest people you'll meet anywhere.

Taipei travel FAQ

How many days do I need in Taipei?

4 to 5 days is ideal. You'll want time for the night markets (hit at least 2-3 different ones), Taipei 101, the National Palace Museum, and a day trip to Jiufen. Add a morning at Beitou Hot Springs and a hike up Elephant Mountain for the skyline view.

What's the food scene like in Taipei?

Honestly, one of the best food cities on earth. Night markets are the obvious draw — Shilin for variety, Raohe for atmosphere, Ningxia for the locals' favorites. But don't skip the beef noodle soup shops, the xiaolongbao at Din Tai Fung, or a proper Taiwanese breakfast with soy milk and egg crepes. Budget around $10-15/day eating mostly at stalls and local spots.

Is Taipei easy to get around?

Extremely. The MRT (metro) is clean, fast, and covers most areas you'd want to visit. Get an EasyCard — it works on the MRT, buses, convenience stores, and even some restaurants. Taxis are cheap by international standards. For Jiufen and other day trips, buses from the city are easy to catch.
