Kraków

One of the few major European cities that wasn't destroyed in WWII, so what you see is genuinely old — and stunning. The main square is enormous, the old Jewish quarter has become one of Europe's coolest neighborhoods, and the food scene is seriously underrated. All at prices that feel like a time warp.

Kraków travel FAQ

How many days do I need in Kraków?

2 to 3 days for the city itself — Main Market Square, Wawel Castle, Kazimierz district, and a meal at a traditional milk bar. Add a day for the Wieliczka Salt Mine (truly impressive) and another if you're visiting Auschwitz-Birkenau.

Is Kraków cheap to visit?

One of the best value destinations in Europe. A hearty Polish meal costs PLN 25-45 ($6-11). A beer is PLN 10-15 ($2.50-3.75). Budget hotels start at PLN 150-250/night ($37-62). Even mid-range restaurants feel affordable compared to Western Europe.

Should I visit Auschwitz from Kraków?

It's a deeply moving experience and about 70 km west of the city. Organized tours run daily (PLN 150-250 / $37-62, including transport and guide, 6-7 hours total). Book in advance, especially in summer. It's emotionally heavy — most people need quiet time afterward. The guided tour is highly recommended over going solo.
