Santorini
White buildings cascading down volcanic cliffs, blue-domed churches, and sunsets that stop you mid-sentence — Santorini delivers exactly what the photos promise. It's a volcanic island in the Aegean Sea where the caldera views are almost too beautiful to be real. Yes, it's touristy and yes, it's expensive for Greece. But standing in Oia watching the sun drop into the sea, you won't care.

Santorini travel FAQ
How many days do I need in Santorini?
2–3 days is perfect. Day 1: Explore Fira, walk the caldera path to Imerovigli, and watch sunset from Oia (get there 2 hours early for a good spot). Day 2: Red Beach and Akrotiri archaeological site in the morning, wine tasting in the afternoon — Santo Wines has the best caldera views. Day 3: Boat tour to the volcanic hot springs, swim at Perissa or Kamari black sand beaches. It's a small island — you can see a lot without rushing.
Is Santorini worth the cost?
It's expensive for Greek standards but worth it for a special trip. Hotels with caldera views start around €200–400/night in shoulder season, double in peak. Budget options exist on the east side (Perissa, Kamari) from €60–100. Meals cost €15–30 per person. ATV rental (€25–35/day) is the popular way to get around. The free things — caldera walks, sunsets, village exploring — are the best parts anyway. If budget is tight, come in early May or late October.
How do I get to Santorini?
Fly from Athens (45 minutes, €50–150). Ferry from Athens' Piraeus port takes 5–8 hours (regular ferry €40, high-speed €65–80). Ferries also connect to other islands — Mykonos, Naxos, Paros, Crete. In summer, ferries run frequently; book 2–3 weeks ahead for popular routes. The airport is tiny and chaotic in summer. From the port (Athinios), it's a dramatic cliff-side bus ride up to Fira (€2.50). Pre-book your hotel transfer if arriving late.
