Lucerne
Lucerne is the Switzerland of your imagination — a medieval covered bridge over impossibly clear water, snow-capped mountains reflected in the lake, and cobblestone streets lined with frescoed buildings. It's small enough to walk in a day but the mountains around it deserve more time. Take a boat across Lake Lucerne, ride up Mount Pilatus, and remember why people have been visiting the Swiss Alps for centuries.

Lucerne travel FAQ
How many days should I spend in Lucerne?
2–3 days. Day 1: Chapel Bridge, Old Town walk, Lion Monument, and a boat cruise on Lake Lucerne (1-hour cruise from CHF 28). Day 2: Mount Pilatus excursion — take the 'Golden Round Trip' (boat + cogwheel train + cable car, about CHF 110) for the full experience. Day 3: Mount Rigi (the 'Queen of the Mountains') or Swiss Museum of Transport for something different. Lucerne also works as a day trip from Zurich (1 hour by train).
Is Switzerland as expensive as they say?
Yes. A meal at a mid-range restaurant costs CHF 25–45 per person. A coffee is CHF 4–5. Mountain excursions range from CHF 60–120. Hotels start around CHF 150–200/night. But — the Swiss Travel Pass (CHF 232 for 3 days) covers trains, buses, boats, and gives 50% off mountain railways, which saves a lot. Budget tips: eat at Coop or Migros takeaway counters (CHF 8–12 for a decent meal), stay in hostels (CHF 40–60), and hike the free trails. The scenery is priceless, at least.
What mountain should I visit — Pilatus or Rigi?
Pilatus for drama — the world's steepest cogwheel railway, rocky peaks, and Alpine panoramas. The Golden Round Trip (boat, train, cable car combo) is one of Switzerland's best experiences. Rigi for a gentler vibe — rolling meadows, lake views, and a famous sunrise (Queen Victoria did it in 1868). Both are about the same price and accessible by boat from Lucerne. If you only have time for one, Pilatus edges it for pure wow factor. Jungfraujoch (Top of Europe) is doable as a long day trip but costs CHF 200+.
