Da Nang

Da Nang sits right in the middle of Vietnam's coast and it's the beach break you need between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. My Khe Beach stretches for miles and barely gets crowded, the seafood is stupid cheap, and the Golden Bridge (the one held up by giant stone hands) is about 30 minutes into the mountains. Hoi An Ancient Town is only 30 minutes south — most people use Da Nang as a base for both. A bowl of mi quang (the local noodle specialty) costs 25,000–35,000 VND and it might be the most underrated dish in Vietnam.

Da Nang travel FAQ

How many days do I need in Da Nang?

3–4 days covers Da Nang and Hoi An together. Day 1: My Khe Beach in the morning, Marble Mountains in the afternoon (15,000 VND entry — bring a flashlight for the caves). Day 2: Full day in Hoi An — the Ancient Town, Japanese Bridge, tailor shops (custom suit in 24 hours for $80–150), and the lantern-lit streets at night. Day 3: Ba Na Hills and the Golden Bridge (cable car about 900,000 VND — pricey for Vietnam but the views are worth it). Day 4: Hai Van Pass by scooter — one of the most scenic coastal roads in the world.

How do I get to Hoi An from Da Nang?

It's only 30 km south. Grab (ride-hailing app) is the easiest — about 150,000–200,000 VND ($6–8) one way. Local bus #1 runs every 20 minutes, takes about 45–60 minutes, and costs 20,000 VND. You can rent a scooter (100,000–150,000 VND/day) and ride yourself — the road is flat and straightforward. Many hotels arrange shuttle buses for around 100,000 VND per person.

What should I eat in Da Nang?

Mi quang is the signature — turmeric noodles with pork, shrimp, peanuts, and rice crackers in a small amount of broth. It's different from anything else in Vietnam and costs 25,000–35,000 VND. Bun cha ca (fish cake noodle soup) is the other local specialty. The seafood along My Khe Beach is incredible — pick your fish from the tanks and they grill it (200,000–400,000 VND feeds two). In Hoi An, don't miss cao lau (thick noodles with pork), white rose dumplings, and the banh mi at Banh Mi Phuong. Night markets in both cities have endless options.
